Do this before you board: the Thailand Digital Arrival Card
Every foreign visitor must complete the free Thailand Digital Arrival Card online within 72 hours before arrival. It replaced the paper TM6 form on May 1, 2025. Fill it in on the phone or a computer, save the confirmation, and show it with your passport. There is no fee. Anyone charging you for it is not the government.
tdac.immigration.go.th is the only official address.
Getting in
What the border asks for
- Passport
- Valid for at least six months from the day you arrive, with a blank page.
- Visa for a US passport
- None needed. Until September 14, 2026 you receive 60 days on arrival. From September 15, 2026 the exemption is 30 days for the 60 countries on the new list, the United States among them, extendable once by 30 days at an immigration office for about 1,900 baht. The Ministry of Interior published the four announcements in the Royal Gazette on August 31, 2026. If you arrive before the 15th your stamp keeps the days it shows.
- Arrival card
- The digital TDAC above, within 72 hours of arrival, free.
- Onward ticket and funds
- Immigration can ask for proof of onward travel and 20,000 baht per person in cash or the equivalent. It is rarely asked of a man with a hotel booking and a return ticket, but have the booking on your phone.
- Longer stays
- For a month or more, the tourist visa (60 days, extendable) or, for a retiree over 50, the Non Immigrant O retirement visa. The Retire Thailand chapter of the World Collection walks the money rules.

- Legal since 1957. The Gender Equality Act of 2015 covers gender expression in work and housing; protection for sexual orientation is partial.
- Spartacus index
- Thailand rose to 41st in the 2025 Spartacus Gay Travel Index after marriage equality; the 2026 edition keeps it well inside the welcoming half of the table.
- In practice
- Public warmth runs ahead of the statute book. Two men checking into one room is unremarkable in Bangkok, Chiang Mai, and Phuket. Public affection is quiet everywhere in Thailand, for everyone; follow the local temperature.

- The Riverside
- Classic luxury, river views, serene spas, and boat access to the temples. The choice for rest and romance, and still affordable by Western standards.
- Sukhumvit
- Modern ease on the Skytrain. Sleek hotels, malls and dining at the door, everything connected.
- Silom
- Steps from the gay bars and the business district, central and lively, on both the BTS and the MRT.
- Strong air conditioning, a pool, and a lift are not luxuries here, they are the day.
- Stay on or near the Skytrain or the river, and the traffic stops being your problem.
- For a longer, calmer stay, Chiang Mai is the retiree's city: cooler, cheaper, and kind.
The body
Pharmacy and clinics
Official sources only. Thailand's private hospitals are among the best in Asia and you pay at the desk, then claim.
- Everyday prescriptions
- Bring up to 30 days of each medicine in the original pharmacy packaging with the prescription or a doctor's letter naming you, the drug, and the dose.
- Controlled medicines
- Opioids, ADHD stimulants, benzodiazepines, and some sleep aids need a Thai FDA permit before you fly. Apply two to four weeks ahead through the Narcotics Control Division's traveler portal. Carrying them without a permit is a criminal matter, not a fine.
- Pharmacies
- Everywhere, and many medicines are sold over the counter. Use a chain (Boots, Watsons, Fascino) or a hospital pharmacy for anything that matters.
- Hospitals
- Bumrungrad, Bangkok Hospital, and Samitivej in Bangkok take walk ins and speak English. Keep your insurance card and passport photo on your phone.
- Emergency
- 1669 for a medical emergency, 1155 for the tourist police.
